Rowan Berries are an incredibly bright and powerful plant and can bring good or bad luck dependant on how they’re treated. European folklore says they were planted on properties to protect the people living there from being enchanted or cursed by evil magic. Often times near gates or entry ways to keep any nasty folks with not great intentions from entering. To damage or cut down a Rowan tree, would bring great misfortune and was thought to be an incredibly uncool thing to do, because you and your whole family line would all be cursed.
Some cultures, used them to predict how long the winter would last. A tree with lots of berries meant that there would be a hard or difficult winter ahead for the people of Newfoundland, but in Finland they thought the opposite, that a tree heavy with berries couldn’t hold the snow and so a winter would be short and sweet.
One nickname for the tree referred to it as the salvation of Thor, because it was said to have hung over a river and saved him from the rushing waters.
In Greek Folklore there was an eagle, that went to save a chalice that helped replenish the gods, on his pursuit, he was injured and the feathers that fell to the ground were said to sprout rowan trees, thus the very distinctive shaping of the leaves.
